Who is Marco Olmo?
Marco Olmo is a legendary name in the world of ultratrail running. Born in 1948 in Robilante, a small village in Italy’s Piedmont region, Marco rewrote the rules of trail running by proving that it’s never too late to achieve greatness. He won some of the world’s toughest races, including the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) in 2006 and 2007, at the age of 58 and 59, respectively. What makes his story unique is that he reached the peak of his career at an age when most consider retiring from competition. Marco is living proof that age is just a number and that mental resilience can surpass physical limitations.
But Marco Olmo is much more than an athlete. He is a symbol of simplicity, humility, and inner strength. With his minimalist lifestyle and a philosophy rooted in self-discipline, he has become an inspiration for anyone facing challenges, whether in sports or life.
Marco grew up in harsh conditions in the Piedmont countryside, in a farming family. Leaving school at a young age, he worked physically demanding jobs, including as a truck driver and a quarry laborer. These economic and physical hardships toughened him but also fueled a sense of isolation and dissatisfaction. It was his need for redemption and freedom that ultimately led him to running.
Marco started running late in life, at a time when trail running wasn’t yet popular. He began with local races and gradually turned to increasingly long and extreme competitions. His determination led him to participate in some of the toughest ultramarathons in the world, such as the Marathon des Sables, a grueling 250-km race in the desert, and the UTMB.
Despite being an outsider in the endurance world, Marco reached the peak of his career between the ages of 50 and 60. His victory at the UTMB in 2006 established him as a legend. That year, competing against younger and well-sponsored athletes, Marco proved that mental strength and experience could triumph over youth and technology.
One of the most poignant aspects of Marco’s story is the loss of his wife, Renata, in 2018. Renata was always his biggest supporter, and her passing marked a turning point in his life. Despite the grief, Marco continued running, finding solace and connection in nature and solitude.
For Marco, running has never been just a competition. It is an act of endurance, a form of meditation, and a way to find meaning in life. His philosophy is deeply rooted in simplicity: he has never sought sponsorships or been lured by the glamour of professional sports. Marco still lives simply in a small house in his hometown, surrounded by the mountains he loves.
Marco has always rejected consumerism and excess. He runs with minimal equipment and sees nature as his ideal training ground.
"I don’t need much to be happy," he often says. This approach has made him an icon of authenticity.
"I run to prove to myself that I can do it." For Marco, every race is an inner battle against fatigue, pain, and doubt. He believes running is a metaphor for life: no matter how hard the path, the important thing is to keep moving forward.
For Marco, running is a way to connect with the natural world. Every step in the mountains is a dialogue with the landscape, a lesson in humility.
"The mountain gives you nothing for free," he says, "but if you respect it, it teaches you everything."
